Percepción de los propietarios sobre las actuales leyes de protección y tenencia animal, aplicada en perros atendidos en dos consultorios veterinarios de la ciudad de Guayaquil.

Abstract

Nowadays, society’s interest to guarantee their pet’s welfare has evolved so much that there’s even non lucrative entities whose job is to warrant the protection and (both mental and physical) well-being of companionship animals. It’s these individuals the ones that, in certain ways, have influenced government entities on a global scale to create and execute policies that will guarantee that animals won’t be abused and will get the opportunity to have a dignified life. The problem is based off of the fact that in Ecuador there’s a high rate of animal abuse, even though there are laws that are supposed to protect animals from these acts; that’s why it’s necessary to evaluate the perception of dog owners about current animal protection and responsible ownership laws. The following paper, was carried out in the Consultorio Académico Veterinario of the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil, and also in the Veterinaria “Zamora”. 102 surveys were conducted to pet owners in both establishments. The obtained data was tabulated on an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed through descriptive statistics in order to get percentages and graphs that would indicate the level of knowledge owners had about the laws of animal protection and responsible ownership. The results showed that 67% of the surveyed had a medium level knowledge about the topic, and it’s recommended to do a socialization campaign in order to teach society about the topic.
