The present research work is interested in knowing the role of Social Work in the care of families who have children with intellectual disabilities who attend a private institution in the city of Guayaquil, in order to understand their performance in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, from the research it was intended to know the expectations they have about the professional role of Social Work, from the members of the role-set and also through the point of view of the social worker (subjective role). For the theoretical bases of the study, the Theory of the Social Construction of Reality of Berger and Luckmann, the Theory of Symbolic Interactionism of Herbert Blumer, and the Role Theory of Zupiria were used. The methodology of this research was based on a qualitative approach, the level was defined as exploratory-descriptive, and the hermeneutic method was used. To collect the information, in-depth interview techniques were used with the social worker, and two focus groups, one with six mothers who have children with intellectual disabilities, and the other with the specialized multidisciplinary team made up of a speech therapist, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a psychologist and two teachers. The results obtained allowed us to know the role played by the social worker in the private institution that cares for children with intellectual disabilities, despite the fact that the role is prescribed, according to what others expect of you, you can also internalize the role, according to what you think you should do and what are the functions you should perform, becoming a dialectic between the person and society.en_US
