Prevalencia de la enfermedad periodontal en pacientes diagnosticados con artritis reumatoide en el Hospital Luis Vernaza.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis are inflammatory pathologies that lead to the destruction of connective and bone tissues. It has been established that both pathologies converge by having pathogenic mechanisms in common. The link is established through microbial agents, mainly Porphymonas gingivalis, this pathogen present in the biofilm of periodontal disease, acts as a mediator for the citrullination of several proteins, which is a significant characteristic in rheumatoid arthritis. Objective: Analyze and determine the prevalence of periodontal disease in patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the Luis Vernaza Hospital. Materials and methods: quantitative approach, of a descriptive cross-sectional type, an observational clinical research design. 60 male and female patients between the ages of 34 and 80 years, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, were included. Results: The prevalence of periodontal disease according to gender obtained a result of 72% made up of women and a total of 7% made up of men. Of the 60 patients, the highest prevalence of periodontal disease occurred in the group of 60 to 70 years with 28%. Regarding the patients who consume tobacco, a result of 30% was obtained, of which 20% presented periodontal disease and 10% presented gingivitis. The prevalence of periodontal disease occurred in 78% of the total population. Conclusion: A prevalence of periodontal disease of 78% of the total population diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis was determined, which shows that there is a close relationship between both diseases and a significant predisposition in the female group.
