Adultos mayores en condiciones de abandono : un estudio de 4 casos de adultos mayores abandonados por sus familias en la ciudadela Martha de Roldós, parroquia Posorja, 2021.

Abstract

This research arises with the objective of exploring the perceptions of the social group of older adults in the face of the abandonment of their families, focusing on “Martha de Roldós” neighborhood, in order to know the causes and negative effects that this act generates in their lives, and in the same way, be able to know the actions that older people carry out to face this situation. To achieve the stated objectives, we worked with a sample of 4 older adults, all residents of the Posorja parish. Within its methodological design, the qualitative method was chosen, working together with a type of phenomenological research, opting for the technique of interviewing older adults to learn in depth all their experiences regarding the situation of abandonment in which they live. Obtaining in this way that these people at the age in which they are, need social relationships and attachment in their lives, but due to the abandonment of their families, they are faced with cases of depression, loneliness, health problems, and adding the economic deficiencies that they present, living in states of extreme poverty in some cases. In relation to what was obtained from the applied interviewees, it can be added that in the past these older adults were considered wise, the base and pillar of any family unit, they were a source of knowledge and experience for the youngest. But today, with the change in the very perception of the family, its roles, and the change in societies, this social group is now considered an economic and care burden for their relatives. Generating all this, a negative view of their lives and their value. According to everything explained, the importance of focusing on the problem of abandonment of these elderly people, who make up one of the most vulnerable social groups, is demonstrated, especially now in the current context of confinement derived from the Covid-19 pandemic. What leaves these people more socially isolated at this stage of their lives.
