Abstract

Introduction: Bone resorption in totally edentulous alveolar processes has been extensively studied, this being a chronic, progressive and irreversible process that occurs in all patients. Numerous studies have indicated that implant-retained overdentures are a well-recognized treatment modality. Objective: Identify the prevalence of implant-retained systems in overdentures, as a prosthetic solution for the totally edentulous patient. Materials and methods: it is qualitative, cross-sectional and retrospective. At the same time, it is observational and analytical since the variables will be observed and analyzed. Analysis and discussion of results: the results indicate that in most of the studies were carried out in women, with an age older than 60 years, the importance of bone remodeling with respect to bone quality and quantity, on the other hand, it was about the influence of the materials, and the shape of the implants, the immediate or deferred loading protocol and the importance of the arch, whether maxillary or mandibular. Conclusion: Treatment options for edentulous patients can be varied, everything will depend on the quantity and quality of bone, the type of implant, the torque used and the difference between whether it is maxillary or mandibular.
