Abstract

This research addresses the problem of the economic effects of drug trafficking in Latin America by differentiating between consumer, producer and transit countries. Theories such as anomie and the subway economy are applied to understand the motivations behind these illegal activities. The drug trafficking value chain is detailed, highlighting its sophistication. I know that there are variables that help the presence and expansion of drug trafficking within the Latin American region. Geography, migration and distrust of institutions are linked to drug trafficking. The results reveal significant relationships between socioeconomic variables and the phenomenon, highlighting the influence of corruption and fear. It is concluded that increased poverty and migration are associated with drug trafficking. It is recommended to investigate the adaptation of criminal organizations, the detailed impact on communities, the effects on mental health and to improve prevention and rehabilitation policies, stressing the importance of international collaboration.
