Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze how the master’s discourse influences the lack of demand for psychological care among the relatives of hospitalized patients. The study aimed to understand its impact on their willingness and ability to seek psychological support. A descriptive approach was used, based on a literature review and structured interviews with clinical psychologists, who provided insights based on their knowledge and experience regarding hospital dynamics.The master’s discourse creates a form of alienation that binds relatives to the medical discourse, assigning them a passive role within the hospital system. In medical practice, this results in their reduction to mere “companions,” who, through the meaning imposed upon them, experience the suffering of witnessing the Other’s pain but do not seek psychological care, as it is not prioritized within the medical framework. Positioned in this role, relatives ultimately fail to recognize their own subjective needs, as they cannot articulate a complaint that could be transformed into a demand, given that there is no Other willing to receive it. In conclusion, the master’s discourse profoundly impacts the relationship between relatives, healthcare professionals, and the hospital institution. It limits the ability of relatives to express their suffering and seek psychological support. This highlights the need to transform the availability and recognition of psychological services in hospitals, ensuring they are acknowledged as legitimate spaces for emotional support.
