Abstract

Breastfeeding is essential for the comprehensive development of the newborn; however, several factors influence its correct technique. Objective: To determine the knowledge of breastfeeding techniques among mothers in labor attending the outpatient clinic of the IESS Los Ceibos Hospital in 2024. Materials and methods: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted among 60 mothers. Technique: A structured survey with closed questions. Results: The most representative group was 24 to 27 years of age 37%, 88% lived in urban areas, and 42% were married. Eighty percent had secondary education, and 58% were employed. Regarding knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, only 33% had good knowledge of the correct position, and 58% were unfamiliar with effective suction. Regarding nutritional status, 30% were overweight and 12% were obese. Forty-two percent received information from nursing staff, primarily through brochures and talks. Conclusion: Deficiencies in knowledge about breastfeeding and a worrying level of overweight among mothers were identified. Strengthening prenatal education and professional support is key to improving breastfeeding practices.
