Conocimiento, actitud y práctica de enfermería en el manejo de cortopunzantes por personal de enfermería de un Hospital de Guayaquil año 2024-2025.

Abstract

Nursing staff plays a key role in hospital safety, so the incorrect use of sharps can generate serious risks, therefore having knowledge, a responsible attitude and safe practices are essential to prevent accidents and guarantee safe care. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices in the handling of sharps by the nursing staff of a Hospital in Guayaquil, year 2024-2025. Methodology: descriptive, quantitative, prospective, cross-sectional. Population: 78 nursing staff from a Hospital in Guayaquil, who meet the inclusion criteria. Technique: Survey. Instrument: C.A.P. Instrument. Results: Among the characteristics, the most common were female (77%), aged 21 to 30 (54%), nursing interns (51%), and those with more than 10 years' experience (31%). They had no sharps accidents (77%), and the main factor was needle capping (68%). Regarding knowledge, they were aware of the risks associated with needle sticks (100%) and were aware of the disposal rules (92%). Regarding attitude, they considered their concerns about instrument safety to be taken seriously (39%) and were motivated to follow the sharps handling policy (39%). Regarding practice, they sought out updated information on safe disposal (39%) and participated in ongoing training (31%). Conclusion: Although staff demonstrated good knowledge and a positive attitude toward sharps handling, unsafe practices persist, highlighting the need to strengthen training and compliance with biosafety protocols.
