Abstract

This thesis proposes the architectural design of a Polivalent Basic Education Center in the continental sector of the Muisne canton, located in the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. The project emerges as a response to the profound inequalities in access to quality education in this coastal region. At a national level, the Ecuadorian education system faces numerous shortcomings, particularly in rural and vulnerable areas where inadequate infrastructure hinders the comprehensive development of children and youth. In the case of Muisne, most educational institutions are located on the island, leaving the continental sector underserved, despite its growing population. This architectural project aims to provide a comprehensive and context-sensitive solution through an educational facility that integrates academic and technical training (polivalent character). The design is guided by principles of resilience, sustainability, climate adaptation, and responsiveness to local emergency conditions. It incorporates local materials, bioclimatic strategies, flexible spaces, and a modular structure that enables progressive construction and community involvement. Furthermore, the center is envisioned as a space for social gathering and community rebuilding, reinforcing the role of architecture as a transformative agent in vulnerable contexts. The work is grounded in an interdisciplinary approach that integrates education, territory, sustainability, and emerging architecture to propose a model that promotes local development and educational equity in high-vulnerability areas.
