Abstract

Patient safety in the surgical setting is a fundamental component of healthcare quality. The Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is recognized as a key tool for preventing adverse events. Objective: To determine the level of compliance with the Surgical Safety Checklist among nursing staff working in a hospital in Guayaquil. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive study was carried out using a non-experimental, cross-sectional design, with the participation of 50 nursing professionals. Data were gathered through the use of the SSC itself, along with a structured survey that collected information about the staff’s work and social characteristics.. Results: The results showed that compliance was relatively high during the preoperative phase, reaching 80%. However, adherence dropped during the intraoperative and postoperative stages, with average levels of 64% and as low as 56%, respectively. The main challenges reported were related to heavy workloads and insufficient training on how to properly apply the LVCS. Conclusion: the use of the LVCS is still not fully consistent, especially during the intraoperative and postoperative phases, where the biggest gaps were identified. These findings suggest that organizational factors have a strong influence on how well the protocol is followed. For this reason, improving ongoing training, strengthening supervision, and fostering a culture of safety within the institution are essential steps toward achieving safer and more standardized surgical care.
