| en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | The present study investigated how conventional and slow-feeder bowls influence the feeding behavior of dogs in two animal shelters in the city of Guayaquil. A total of 200 dogs between one and seven years of age were evaluated using a structured ethological record, analyzing variables such as body posture, vocalization, exploratory behavior, frustration, feeding-related anxiety, and feeding time. The procedure was carried out in four phases: registration and acclimation, use of the conventional bowl, use of the slow-feeder bowl, and the preference test between both feeding devices, followed by statistical analysis. The findings showed that slow-feeder bowls significantly increased feeding time and reduced the speed of food consumption compared with conventional bowls. A decrease in anxiety levels, lower postural tension, and reduced behaviors associated with food competition were also observed. In addition, slower intake was associated with a lower risk of bloating and aerophagia. The study highlights the potential of slow-feeder bowls as an environmental enrichment strategy and as a practical tool to promote physical and emotional welfare in shelter dogs. | en_US |
