Abstract

This capstone project examined the relationship between the conflictual experience of maternal love and the development of anorexia in adolescent girls ages 12 to 17, using a psychoanalytic approach. The research was relevant because anorexia is a clinical and social phenomenon that significantly affects adolescents’ physical and psychological well-being, making it necessary to understand its subjective dimension beyond restrictive behavior. The main objective was to analyze this relationship through interviews with health professionals in order to provide guidance for possible therapeutic approaches. To that end, the study sought to describe the role of the maternal bond in early stages, identify manifestations of anorexia, compare the factors that showed its onset and persistence and propose recommendations for therapeutic guidance based on the contributions of the psychologists interviewed. A qualitative approach was used, within an interpretive paradigm, with a phenomenological design and descriptive scope, employing semi-structured interviews with ten psychologists experienced in treating anorexia in adolescent girls. The results indicated that an overprotective, intrusive, or distant maternal bond influenced the adolescents’ relationship with their bodies and food, and that the anorexic symptom functioned as a means of separation and control in the face of a maternal Other experienced as excessive or absent
