Abstract

The present degree work deals with the mourning process that mothers of newborns go through after the diagnosis of congenital anomalies. The importance of the research lies in the understanding and validation of the emotions and the whole process involved in the abandonment of the libidinal position that mothers have on that idealized child. The purpose of this qualitative-descriptive research is to describe the grieving process suffered by mothers of newborns when they receive the diagnosis of congenital anomalies through the analysis of clinical interviews to establish the psychological effects of grief. The results showed that not all mothers went through the three stages of grief. One of four mothers had not concluded the bereavement, and another of the mothers interviewed did not demonstrate having gone through a second stage of bereavement, concluding that, despite finding similarities in terms of emotions experienced, each mother goes through bereavement in a different way, since it does not consist of steps to follow that will determine whether or not that mother was able to process the loss successfully.
