Abstract

Threads of the Port is a short documentary that seeks to recognize the cultural heritage of Guayaquil through its traditional clothing, discovering that Guayaquil's guayabera shirts are carriers of memory, rather than simply an indigenous garment. The project aims to offer an intimate and personal look at the connection this garment has with the coastal people, before reflecting on how the city's status as a port city is significant in its traditions. The narrative unfolds through a sonic journey through Guayaquil: the sound of the river, the bustle of the port, the crowded streets, the noise of sewing machines in workshops, and the rustling of fabrics as they are handled. These elements not only create an atmosphere but also tell a story; sound becomes a thread that weaves together the past and the present. The documentary includes interviews with artisans, historians, and citizens who contribute to offering a human and personal perspective. Their stories allow us to understand how the guayabera, arriving from other cultural contexts, was adopted and reinterpreted in a city marked by constant exchange. Therefore, Guayaquil's port city nature is crucial to understanding how the external can become tradition. The guayabera becomes a metaphor for the port itself: a meeting place where stories, influences, and memories intertwine.
