Description: This paper pursues to map the skills and competences required by a translator aiming to work in the subtitling industry. These subtitling studies are meant to be at the disposal of the students who have completed their university studies at the School of English Language of the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil and desire to boost their practical skills in multimedia translation. This descriptive study contains a description of all the skills and competences required by subtitlers who wish to work competently in this field. This map of skills and competences will help translators tackle the common problems that arise during the subtitling process and it will also help them become familiar with the field so they can perform successfully. The gathering and proposal of the necessary skills and competences was done through questionnaires answered by professional translators and subtitlers. The School of English Language is expected to design an academic curriculum based on this map of skills and competences and offer specialization studies for translation students who wish to become subtitlers. This program will provide them will all the necessary knowledge and training to work in the subtitling field.
